Printing Instructions

Let’s print out the free women's sewing pattern!

The sewing pattern comes with 3 different printing options! The US Letter and A4 print is a tile version PDF that you can print out at home. The A0 version is used by a printshop to print on a single sheet of paper and saves time taping the separate pages together.

Additionally, you can use view mode to only select/print the size you are working on. Each pattern file is designed with layers of different sizes. There is an option to print only your size or all sizes based on your preference. Open the file in Adobe Acrobat and keep in legend layer.

If you print at home, then you need to trim each sheet by cutting off the top and excess margin. Tape each page together by row, and then attach the rows together. Use the diamond marks to align everything!

Always make sure to print on 100% scale.
(Do not ‘fit to page’ or reduce the size!)

There is a test square on the first page of the pattern.
Use as a scale to check if the dimensions are 5x5cm and/or 2x2”.

Milkmaid front tie maxi dress pattern pieces include:

A- Front Top, cut 1 on folded fabric
B- Front Waist Yoke, cut 1 on folded fabric
C- Center Front Skirt, cut 1 on folded fabric
D- Right Front Skirt, cut 1
E- Left Front Skirt, cut 1
F- Back Top, cut 2
G- Back Skirt, cut 2
H- Sleeve, cut 2

⅜” or 1cm seam allowance is already included unless indicated on the pattern or instruction book.

 

Step by Step Instruction

Step 1- Adjust the sewing machine to the largest stitch length 4.0 or 5.0 and loosen the tension. From notch to notch, sew double stitch around the under bust seam of Front Top (A) pattern pieces without backstitching. Manually hand gather to create shirring and set aside.

Step 2- Place ¼” or 0.6cm width elastic band on the wrong side of Front Top (A) from one side to the other along the neckline. Stretch as you zigzag stitch on the center of elastic. Fold the elastic to the wrong side of Front Top (A) so it covers the elastic and edge topstitch.

Step 3- Prepare bias strap that is 1” width by 26” long (2.5cm x 66cm long). Fold the bias strap in half right side together and straight stitch ¼” or 0.6cm width. Trim the excess seam allowance to ⅛” or 0.3cm width and use a loop turner to flip inside out. Press the binding, then slide both ends of binding and baste stitch to clean finish.

Step 4- Fold the binding in half and mark the center. Place the binding center of Front Top (A) neckline and match the center point. Tack stitch to secure and make a cute bow tie. 

Step 5- Place the Front Top (A) and Front Waist Yoke (B) right side together and straight stitch ⅜” or 1cm along the under bust seam. Adjust the gathering evenly before sewing and overlock stitch the seam allowances.

Step 6- Place Right Front Skirt (D) and Center Front Skirt (C) right side together and straight stitch ⅜” or 1cm along the princess seam. Overlock stitch the seam allowance and press seam toward the side seam.

Step 7- Overlock stitch both princess seams of Left Front Skirt (E) and Center Front Skirt (C). Place Left Front Skirt (E) and Center Front Skirt (C) right side together and straight stitch ⅜” or 1cm along the princess seam until the notch. Press seam open and edge topstitch around the slit opening.

Step 8- Place ¼” or 0.6cm width elastic band on the wrong side of Back Top (F) from one side to the other along the neckline. Stretch as you zigzag stitch on the center of elastic. Fold the elastic to the wrong side of Back Top (F) so it covers the elastic and edge topstitch. Repeat the process on the other side of Back Top (F).

Step 9- Place Front and Back Top (A&B&F) right sides together and close the side seams with ⅜” or 1cm straight stitch. Overlock stitch the seam allowance and press seam toward the Back Top (F).

Step 10- Place Front and Back Skirt (C&D&E&G) right sides together and close the side seams with ⅜” or 1cm straight stitch. Overlock stitch the seam allowance and press seam toward the Back Skirt (G).

Step 11- Place the Front and Back Top (A&B&F) and Front and Back Skirt (C&D&E&G) right sides together, then close the waist seam with ⅜” or 1cm straight stitch. Overlock stitch the seam allowance and press seam toward the hem.

Step 12- Overlock stitch both center back seams of Back Top and Back Dress (F&G).

Step 13- Insert an invisible zipper at the right side seam of the Back Top and Skirt (F&G). Open the zipper, then place the zip tape on the right side of the Back Top and Skirt (F&G) and sew closely to the zipper teeth. Do the same to the other side of zipper tape on the Back Top and Skirt (F&G). Sew up the remainder of the center back seam with ⅜” or 1cm straight stitch and press seam open.

Step 14- Place ¼” or 0.6cm width elastic band on the wrong side of Sleeve (H) by matching from one notch to the other notch along the top. Zigzag stitch on the center of elastic and stretch as you sew. Fold elastic to the wrong side of Sleeve (H) so it covers the elastic and edge topstitch.

Step 15- Place ¼” or 0.6cm width elastic band on the wrong side of Sleeve (H) from one side to the other along the sleeve opening. Stretch as you zigzag stitch on the center of elastic. Fold the elastic to the wrong side of Sleeve (H) so it covers the elastic and edge topstitch.

Step 16- Fold the Sleeve (H) right side together, then sew ⅜” or 1cm width and overlock stitch. Press the seam towards backside of Sleeve (H).

Step 17- Slide the Sleeve (H) through the armhole of Front and Back Top (A&B&F) so the right sides are together. Pin around the armhole opening, then sew ⅜” or 1cm width straight stitch and overlock around the pinned area of each armhole.

Step 18- Overlock stitch the dress hem and fold ⅜” or 1cm width toward the wrong side of the fabric. Straight stitch ¼” or 0.6cm width around dress opening. Gently press all around the dress to enjoy your milkmaid front tie maxi dress!
